Late on Tuesday night the anti-fascist hip hop artist Pavlos Fyssas was murdered in the Greek capital of Athens by members of the far right Golden Dawn party.
34-year-old Pavlos Fyssas the famous left-wing rapper performed under the stage name Killah P. It is understood he was stabbed after watching a football match with his girlfriend.
The rapper was attacked by up to 30 neo Nazis many wearing shirt’s with the logo of the Golden Party on it along with military boots.
Pavlos Fyssas, an active anti-fascist in Athens, was stabbed to death by the gang in the Piraeus area of Athens. It is understood that whilst he was being attacked by the fascist mob, a man pulled up in a car and jumped out before proceeding to stab the rapper.
The 34-year-old was stabbed twice in the heart before dying later in the hospital from his injuries sustained in the attack. Pavlos Fyssas is said to have identified his attacker before being taken to hospital. The mayor of Keratsini in Piraeus, Loukas Tzannis has said that Fyssas was “ambushed” by Golden Dawn members.
Witnesses claim that the police stood back and watched the murder of the anti-fascist take place with the police apparently telling witnesses they could intervene because of the high number of attackers involved.
Wednesday brought mass raids of Golden Dawn party offices throughout Athens as the police sought the perpetrator of the attack.
A 45-year-old male was later arrested for the murder and has allegedly admitted to the political motive behind the murder detailing his connection with Golden Dawn.
The murder brought hundreds of left-wing activists to the site of the murder to mourn for the rapper. A rally organised for later on Wednesday was attended by thousands on the streets of Western Athens with the rally turning sour when police fired tear gas at some of the protesters after the rally had turned violent.
This attack on political opponents is not uncommon for Golden Dawn although murder is, only last week whilst members of the communist party KKE were out erecting posters they were attacked by up to 50 members of alleged Golden dawn mob which led to nine members of KKE being hospitalised.
In the aftermath of the murder the Golden Dawn party have denied any connection with the man accused of the murder. The Greek president Karolos Papoulias has said in response to the murder “It is our duty not to allow any space whatsoever to fascism – not even an inch.”
