Holding a pencil and forming letters can be difficult for children with writing issues, who may struggle with fine motor skills. Here are some pointers to help your child learn these skills.
To help your child get a better grasp when he begins learning how to write, consider purchasing some golf pencils. These are the tiny pens you see at mini-golf courses and bowling alleys. Their size makes them easier for small hands to hold on to and balance properly. If you can not find golf pens, that is OK. A broken crayon, half a piece of chalk, or even the brief leftover bit of a well-used pencil could work, too.
A pen grip can help your child learn how to hold a pencil properly. An excellent grip is a type that looks like a squishy blob with fingerprints inside. However, you could also create your own. Poke the tip of a pencil through the center and push the clay an inch up. Then, hold the pencil as though you’re writing and push your fingers and thumb into the clay to make the indents.
Your child can practice writing letters from mashed potatoes, sugar, flour, or even shaving lotion. Spread whatever material you use on a desk, in a shoebox lid or onto a plate. Have your child use his pointer finger to draw letters and also write modest words. Writing this manner will help him understand how it feels to create the letters without needing to worry about how to maintain his pen or crayon.
Sometimes kids can not feel themselves creating letters when they write. To get a textured surface, have your child put his paper in addition to something bumpy, such as sandpaper or a demanding plastic placemat. If he wants to feel that the lines with his pen, ask his teacher for some lined paper or use a wide-ruled notebook paper. Your child’s pen will”bump” the lines when he writes.
If your child has trouble with leaving too much or too little space between words, attempt a “spacekid.” Offer your child a clean Popsicle stick. Ask him to draw a face on the top so that it resembles a person. The next word begins on the opposite side of the pole.
