3 Reasons Why Small Business Needs a Website

why small business needs a website

Does Your New Business Have a Website?

I get asked this question all the time and I understand the skepticism.

Its already hard work trying to come up with a feasible business idea (maybe our planner can help?) and mothers who are just starting out in the business world, often do not want to add on the technical hassle of building their own website or even hiring a developer to do it for them.

I get you.

For those who are just starting out (and who don’t code or do programming in their spare time), a proper website (where you own a .com, .net .org etc) can be a ‘white elephant’ – i.e. something expensive and nice to look at, but not exactly very useful to you.

Right?

Although it is tempting, you shouldn’t judge your website, based on the number of sales you make or the number of leads it brings in.

“You wouldn’t necessarily trust a person you’ve met for the first time, so the same goes for a website.”

Click to Tweet
Statistically, 96% of people come to a website without the intention to buy; they are merely on a fact-finding mission and this is YOUR chance to explain your expertise ‘neutrally’. The key is to leave a lasting impression ( whether in the form of cookies, or in your branding ), so that they are familiar with you the next time you sell.

3 reasons why your small business needs a professional website

1) Branding and Image
Branding your small business

One of the things your website should do is leave a good impression. No matter where the audience came from( i.e social media; FB, Google, Ads), they should be able to immediately see the message you are trying to convey. If they are part of your target audience, the website should also answer the questions that they might have.

2) Content marketing to reinforce your expertise.
What is Content Marketing

With so many sellers out there marketing a product, buyers are continuously searching for a reason to purchase YOUR product. That’s where content marketing comes in. Google has also given an advantage to websites that produce content on a regular basis ( Drop off rate, etc)

Consumers are increasingly doing research online before they purchase an item and one way to demonstrate your expertise or the beneficial feature is in the content you write.

3) Retargeting pixels
Facebook Retargeting

If you use Facebook as the main way of connecting with your audience, a website is one of the ways you can win over your competitor. Instead of having to “hard sell” your products on your page all the time, you can use it as an engagement platform and you can subtly put in FB ads to do the selling.

I already have a website, but it’s not performing well. What should I do?
If you already have a website but you are not sure whether it’s of any use at all, you need to start tracking its performance. You can do this by :

Small Business website

1 ) Installing Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a free web analytics software that you can install on your website to track several things. With Google Analytics, you are able to see :

How many visitors came to your site
Where your visitors are coming from
Which pages they visit on your site
How long they spent on your site
and many more
When you have collected sufficient data, you then can start to growth hack your business.

2 ) Install a Facebook Pixel.

Facebook pixels are meant to take your Facebook ads to the next level. (And no its not to boost post!). Whether it is to reinforce your branding, deliver that sales pitch, or to get your readers to take the next step, a Facebook pixel connected to your website will definitely take your marketing to the next level.

3 ) Installing Sumo Me Heat Maps to see what your audience is reading.

The Sumo Me Heat Maps is an awesome feature to understand what your user is reading or the steps they take when they are on your website. According to SumoMe,

“Heat Map shows you exactly where people are clicking on your site. With this information, you can then improve your pages to show your visitors what they want to see. ”

3 ) Install lead capture fields and forms

A reader’s email address is one of the most direct and useful ways to reach them, whether it is for getting more views for your article or whether you are starting to sell a product. Not convinced? Check this article out.

With your own website, you will be able to include as many email capture fields as you want, just mix it up so it doesn’t seem like you are spamming the readers.

Blogging for Business by Neil Patel

blogging for business

I don’t know about you but I love to hear stories of an entrepreneur’s journey to success (especially when they make a claim as audacious as $100k / month!). Reading about their challenges and how they overcome it somehow makes the entrepreneurial journey seems less daunting, because maybe, we can see that there is light at the end of the tunnel after all.

But what’s better than a success story? It’s a blog detailing the entire process.

Success stories tend to summarize the process, while a blog (if the entrepreneur is sincere about capturing every single aspect of the process) is a better way of understanding that the journey is not a straight path.

One of the main reasons I’m writing out this blog post is so I can capture and revisit the chronological journey of his challenge, which I couldn’t find on his site. The “$100k challenge” posts gets lost on his blog, probably because ALL of his blogposts are awesome and extremely detailed. I just get distracted reading them and forget that I was searching for the “$100k challenge” posts in the first place.

Another reason is that the information he provides is out of this world ( did I mention awesome already?) , and you ladies would definitely benefit from it.

A little about Neil.

Neil Patel is famous in the internet / digital marketing landscape for his blog Quicksprout.com as well as software companies that he founded, Crazyegg and Kissmetric. He’s also a speaker and a regular contributor to sites like Forbes and Entrepreneur. My intro just doesn’t do him any justice so you might as well read about him here.

A summary of the $100k/ month blog challenge

Neil first wrote a blogpost in March 2015 where he claimed that he could make a $100 000 a month on a brand new blog in a year. He gave his readers 3 options to select from i.e. a nutrition blog, a software company or a mastermind group.

The readers eventually chose a nutrition blog since it was in a very crowded niche. In addition to that, some readers pointed out that he shouldn’t be the one to front the blog since he was already so well known. It had to be done by someone who didn’t have any experience in internet or digital marketing.

Why should you read his posts?

  • Neil definitely has the experience of building million dollar companies, so this is almost like a case study of how to build one step by step.
  • He’s not trying to sell anything, not directly anyway.
  • He’s written about it in a simple and easy to understand manner.

I’ve listed the post in chronological order. And just in case you don’t have time to go through every single post, I’ve also added a column with some details of the posts I found extremely useful.
